Claudine Picado and Elizabet Porterfield thanking veterans

Bilingual Center's Veteran's Project

The Bilingual Center School Veterans’ Project (founded and led by HLA teacher, Claudine Picado) strengthens written and verbal communication skills (in two languages) while promoting appreciation for our country’s servicemen and women, supporting career exploration, and encouraging relationship building.

This meaningful project (which was recognized by the American Legion in 2022) has been hosted by School 33 over eleven years thanks to the support of school administration (Lisa LoVallo-Coyle) and the dedication and hard work of Beth Porterfield (school counselor), Brian Hilton (music teacher), Stacey Ulak (art teacher), Robert Taylor (PE teacher), Kelly Antkowiak (kindergarten teacher), Petra Mencia (Bilingual SPED teacher), Maria Cardona (retired Bilingual ICT teacher), Susan Trifiletti (retired ICT teacher), and past and present Junior High Faculty.

On October 1, 2024, Bilingual Center School 33 welcomed over 40 veterans to be interviewed by the eighth-grade students. Veterans (as well as active military members) shared their very personal stories of sacrifice and bravery through individual interviews. Students and vets have shared that these heartfelt conversations have created meaningful and lasting connections.

The information gathered from the Interview Day was organized by students into poster presentations which were displayed at the Annual Veterans’ Luncheon on November 8, 2024.

Eighth graders shared a meal (catered by the students from Emerson School of Hospitality) with their “vets” while discussing their projects and sharing gratitude for their service.

The Buffalo Public Schools district is grateful that GEICO, National Fuel, and West Herr joined Bilingual Center School 33 as partners and sponsors.

The emotional highlight of the event was the Heroes' Walk of Appreciation when the entire school community gathered throughout hallways to thank the Veterans as they exited the building.
